The Action Replay is a game enhancer, created by Datel, which has been made for multiple systems.
History
Originally a Amiga expansion cartridge was developed. This version allowed for users to monitor all changes on the video game and save it to the Action Replays memory. A button on the Action Replay can be pressed which will bring up a screen giving access to this info which could then be modified. Later versions included a complete dissasembler. A knob on the cartridge could also slow down gameplay to give players more time to react.
A version was also created for the Commodore 64 and PC.
Eventually, versions were created for later systems and dropped the dissasemblers and slow motion features. Instead they focused on cheat codes. The use of cheat codes was improved as button toggle codes became available which will activate codes only when a button or button combination was pressed. Eventually encryption was used in codes to prevent codes from being shared with competing Game Enhancers. This also makes it difficult to modify existing codes but fortunately a program called GCNrd was created which would assist in modifying and creating codes for the Gamecube AR.
With the creation of the Nintendo DS Action replay encryption was dropped and a trainer for finding codes was released.
